Big Knit 2010

Walthamstow is about to be inundated by thousands of little woolly hats, but it’s all in a good cause.

Age Concern UK has joined forces with a drinks company for the seventh annual Big Knit campaign. The charity’s Waltham Forest branch has pledged to contribute 8,000 mini woolly hats to the national target of 800,000 by the deadline of 28th September. Each hat will sit on top of a bottle of innocent smoothie which will then be available to buy in Sainsbury’s stores from 3rd November. From each bottle sold 25p will go to Age Concern.

The campaign is to promote and raise funds for winter warmth for the elderly. The Big Knit is driven by a community effort and 80% of the funds raised in Waltham Forest will fund local projects.

Last year more than 444,000  hats and veg pots were made and this year Age Concern believes that this success can be doubled. So far local individuals and groups have contributed 1,000 hats but more help is needed for our borough to reach its target.

If you’re keen on knitting you can help by contributing as many hats as you can to the branch. They have made some simple hat patterns available to help you on your way. Alternatively, Age Concern welcomes any wool and knitting materials donated.
